The book of Exodus is one of the most powerful and memorable books of the Bible. It focusses on a community of slaves trapped in Egypt 3,500 years ago. As the epic begins, these slaves have no land, no leader, and no laws. They have no sacred temples, no sacred text, and no sacrifice for sins. They have little knowledge of who God is or what he plans to do with them. However, they cling to a promise given to their ancestor Abraham that God would make them into a great nation and bless them. In the end, the book of Exodus is about the impossible rescue of God’s people, and it’s one of the clearest places in the Old Testament where we see who God is and what he plans do in the future gospel of Jesus Christ.
